No. 11 Golden Eagles Use Late First Half Flurry To Post Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team used a late flurry in the first half to post its second big win of the 2007 season.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) scored three goals in less than four minutes and went on to a 5-1 win over Cal State San Marcos Wednesday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A., ranked 11th in the nation in the most recent NSCAA/adidas poll, has scored 10 goals in its first two games.

Morten Marthinsen scored two goals and added an assist, while John Massaquoi, Ruben Hansen and Kyle Hewitt also scored goals. Rufino Franco had three assists for the Golden Eagles. The three assists tie a single-game record at Cal State L.A.

Tobias Hummel made four saves while playing the first 71 minutes for Cal State L.A., while Noe David made three saves over the final 19 minutes.

Brian Luhrs scored the lone goal for the Cougars (1-3).

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a goal by Marthinsen. He received a perfect pass from Franco in the right side of the box and knocked a shot into the left corner of the net.

Cal State San Marcos responded well after giving up the goal and began creating some chances. The Cougars nearly had a goal when Curtis Marcikic headed a shot that got past Hummel and was seemingly on its way into the net. Franco, though, was able to kick the ball away before it went in for a tying goal.

The Golden Eagles put the game away with their three-goal flurry that started in the 41st minute on a goal by Massaquoi. Franco started the play with a pass down the left side that led to a shot by Marthinsen. That shot was saved by Cal State San Marcos goalie Trent Painter, but Marvin Sandoval got to the rebound and took another shot that was also stopped by Painter. Massaquoi, though, got to that rebound and knocked it home.

Then, less than a minute later, Marthinsen got his second goal of the game when he headed in a cross by Massaquoi. Franco was again involved in the scoring play, getting the ball to Massaquoi for his crossing pass.
The Golden Eagles made it 4-0 before halftime when Ruben Hansen knocked in a corner kick by Franco with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

Cal State L.A. made it 5-0 in the 61st minute when Hewitt headed in a pass from David Mora.

Cal State San Marcos got its lone goal with 18 minutes remaining in the game when Luhrs scored with an assist from Dan Sims.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal Baptist in Riverside.
